On Friday, July 13, 2012, Wayne State University (WSU) hosted the second annual Source Detroit Procurement Conference at the Matthaei Athletic Complex. The three Midtown anchor institutions - Detroit Medical Center (DMC), Henry Ford Health System (HFHS), and WSU – were on site to meet with Detroit-based and diversity-owned businesses in an effort to identify potential new vendors and to renew relationships with current suppliers. The Procurement & Strategic Sourcing staff at WSU were joined by representatives from Computing & Information Technology, Facilities Planning & Management, and Office of Housing and Residence Life. The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and Midtown Detroit, Inc. also attended the conference to help identify additional opportunities to procure more goods and services from local vendors and make valuable connections between the anchors and new suppliers. The number of interested vendors attending the 2012 Source Detroit Procurement Conference nearly doubled from 2011, with over 200 supplier representatives in attendance. Detroit-based suppliers were invited to attend the conference and meet with representatives responsible for the procurement of the various goods and services that each institution requires. | WSU FP&M | The Procurement Conference at Wayne State has evolved over the years from a minority-owned businesses focus to one that includes businesses owned by women and veterans, as well as Detroit-based businesses. This expanded focus is a direct result of each institution’s participation in a broader anchor strategy to Live, Hire, and Buy local. (For more information on this initiative, please visit the Woodward Corridor Initiative website: http://woodwardcorridorinitiative.org/index.php/anchor-strategy/). WSU Housing | __ | As part of the Buy Local initiative, the procurement leaders at WSU, HFHS, and DMC meet on a regular basis to identify ways to expand the level of spending in Midtown and other areas of Detroit. To date, approximately $16.5 million in spending has been transferred to Detroit–based businesses. The Source Detroit Procurement Conference is just one result of these collaborative efforts to keep more money circulating through the local economy. Forsuppliers, the Source Detroit rocurement Conference provided the valuable opportunity to discuss innovation and market niche products and services directly with decision makers at each of the anchor institutions. For the anchor institutions and their partners, the conference helped to identify potential new suppliers for the approximately $1.6 billion in goods and services purchased by WSU, HFHS, and DMC annually. | WSU Procurement & Strategic Souring would like to give a special thanks to the Wayne State Department of Athletics for use of the Matthaei Athletic Complex.
